The world of surrogacy has its own phrases and terms and classifications and types. In terms of the commercialization, we differentiate between altruistic surrogates and commercial surrogates. Statistically speaking I would estimate that altruistic surrogacy is a lot more common in the media, and commercial surrogacy is a lot more common in the real world.
Altruistic surrogates are generally friends who accept to be a surrogate out of a sense of friendship. The other major point of difference is between traditional surrogates and gestational surrogates. With these two the difference is in terms of medicine and legality. Most people think of traditional surrogates when the word is mentioned. This is simply where you get a "mom for hire" basically. You pay a woman to be the the mother of your child and then give up the rights to her child over to you.
When a surrogate does gestational surrogacy she is technically not the mother of the child. She is implanted with a fetus and she is nothing more than a birth-giver. This makes things easier legally and emotionally. It might sounds like cutting edge medicine, and it is, but it's not risky or experimental. It is well established and risk-free.
When it comes to which kinds of surrogacy are more or less common, I would say that commercial, gestational surrogacy is far more common than any combination including altruistic or traditional surrogacy elements.
