Aquaponics Systems And PVC Are Safe Together?

by Victoria Kelley

For years the way to produce food using fish and produce in an aquaponics system, was the healthiest to me. That was until someone mentioned that PVC could have a potential health issue with this method of growing food. The original intention in the research I carried out was to disprove this. So I investigated the idea of chemicals being leached into the water from PVC.

How could there possibly be a problem with fish, produce, natural bacteria, water and eating healthy. The idea of toxins in the system was laughable to me. For three years all the research showed me this was a wonderful way to eat and thrive. After all nature does it all the time. Fish grow in lakes with plant life and there are microbes in the water which helps everything work in unison. However it never occurred to me that in a lake nature doesn't use PVC. Once humans do that, things in nature, don't seem to go as well. Is this the same with the whole aquaponics/ hydroponics growing too?

The more research I found out about PVC the more disheartened I became about my aquaponics system. I dug up twelve years of research from scientific studies from all over the world. There were Greenpeace studies, EPA, CDC, EU commissions and agencies all saying the same thing...get rid of PVC. Some of the research I had look for required me to become like Sherlock Holmes. Missing pages and links were gone on the internet but I found most of it. There was enough proof to show me that my aquaponics system and PVC could create a potential health hazard to my family.

When being manufactured, PVC is made with lead, cadmium and phthalates. Finding out about these chemicals and the long term health issues from exposure, makes your head spin. Then there is a chemical released called dioxin, if PVC is burned. It is a class one carcinogen. PVC is not recyclable. This means there are landfills all around the world with PVC breaking down and leaching potential chemicals into the earth. There is a reason why manufacturers tell you to bury the pipe because long term exposure to sun and heat can cause lead to be released. Even the name polyvinyl chloride suggests chemicals.

There are thousands of backyard aquaponics systems across the world with PVC exposed to the elements everyday. It is not just the pipe and the fittings but the bell siphons are also made of PVC in an aquaponics system. Could leaching from the pipes be occurring in these systems? It is possible because there are no guarantees from these reports, that it won't happen. More research from people who own an aquaponics system should be done. Draw your own conclusions because it is better that you know what is a risk. Water is flowing continuously from the grow beds to the fish tanks through PVC. Plastics are not the same. Some are very different from other types. Just because you feel OK doesn't mean there isn't something happening in the aquaponics or hydroponics systems. Remember humans once used lead paint in their homes, until we knew the serious health effects of that...
