Over one hundred years of famous dancers

by Clayton B Whitefield

The world of dance has always been awash with talent. Whilst their talent has never been in question, there has always been a select few who have stood apart from their contemporaries as leaders and pioneers in their fields. The same can be said for any form of dance from classical to modern, from tap to ballroom. Their impact on the dancing of today and even on modern culture has been significant and it is they upon whom we will be concentrating here.

Our first dancer was a Russian born in the city of St Petersburg in 1881. We are of course talking about Anna Pavlova, probably one of the most recognisable names not just in ballet, but also in the world of desserts! Anna inspired many other ballerinas with her strength on such a small frame and she achieved fame all over the world after founding her own ballet company.

In the field of classical dancing, there have been an uncountable number of greats and pioneers achieving great success such as - amongst others - Rudolf Nureyev. We will however move away from the field of ballet at the moment and talk a little about contemporary. The most notable example of recent times is Michael Jackson, whose moves such as the moonwalk are amongst the most imitated dance moves ever.

There have been many popular dancers on TV and cinema throughout the years, none more so than the late, great Patrick Swayze with his brilliant role in Dirty Dancing. Fred Astaire was another famous film actor and dancer whose films alongside Ginger Rogers are amongst some of the most well-known films involving dancers over the years. The list here is obviously not exhaustive and there have been many, many renowned dancers on our screens.

Apart from classical dancers and people on the TV screens, one of the most well-known (and most imitated) dancers of our generation is Michael Flatley. His unique take on Irish dancing in Lord of the Dance and Riverdance has made him a worldwide superstar. Modern-day dancers are likely to become the "legends" of tomorrow, but who knows who it will be. Dance groups and crews are one option but the genre of pop music is also another place from which they could come.
