Use This Advice To Improve Your Parenting Skills

by Steve Rian

Many people plan carefully for their babies while other seem to find themselves in the midst of parenthood unexpectedly. But however it happens, there you are and it doesn't matter how you got there. Now the focus needs to be on doing the best job that you can. This article can bring some insight into the full time job of being a parent.

A good parenting tip that is good to practice is to spend time with each of your children separately. Each child has a different personality and spending time separately will help them feel appreciated. It is also a way for you to have an experience with them that they will never forget.

Use common household items to keep your child entertained. Items such as empty paper towel rolls, pots and pans, empty boxes and old clothing, can easily occupy a child's imagination without a lot of financial investment. As an added benefit, children encouraged to use their imagination in play, are often more successful at problem solving as they get older.

Do not argue with your spouse about discipline in front of your child. When your child sees the disagreement, it will affect how he reacts to the discipline. He may not think that one parent is being fair. To have discipline be effective, you must have a united front with your spouse.

A good way to build a great relationship with your child is by having fun and giving your time in playing with them. This can be done by telling short stories or even by solving a giant jigsaw puzzle. Be sure to give them your undivided attention and make sure the TV is off.

Keep the belt on your waist where it belongs! A lot of parents will spank children, but this can be really damaging for kids. Make sure that you're using that belt to hold up your jeans and not to discipline your child. Something like that really borders on child abuse and goes above and beyond discipline. Prisoners aren't even hit.

When treating common children's cold and flu symptoms, always check the active ingredients in his or her medications whether it is an over-the-counter or prescription medicine. These products contain multiple ingredients that are commonly found in a number of medications. Rather than risk an overdose, it is safest to use only one medication unless otherwise directed by a pediatrician.

It is important to live up to any threat that you give your children. Children often act out and need to receive discipline. If you continuously tell your child that there will be a consequence for their action, and it never comes to fruition, they will think that there are no consequences for their actions.

An easy way to build a good relationship with your child is to appreciate the simple things that he does. This can be done by displaying his or her artwork (such as schoolwork) on prominent places such as refrigerator doors. This will make the child feel wanted and appreciated at the same time.

Your marriage is just as important as your children, so take good care of it. You need time together as a couple to ensure that you keep the passion alive, so make sure to have a date night once a week where it's just you and your spouse. The kids will be there when you get home!

If you have two or more children in the house, enlist the help of older siblings to care for the younger ones. Older siblings can help with playtime and can even monitor bath times (depending on their age). If you have a teenager and a young child, you might also be able to benefit from lower cost babysitting and teach your older child some responsibility in the process.

If your children are playing with toys and sets that have dozens of tiny pieces or parts, use a cookie sheet as a sort of place mat. The raised edges will prevent small pieces from being scattered around and lost forever. And clean-up is simple: just tilt the cookie sheet and pour everything back into its box or container.

As a parent, ask yourself a very serious question: Does my child really need a cell phone? You will probably find that the answer is NO in most cases. Kids do not need cell phones and iPads and all the other gadgets out there, so make sure that you're not spoiling them with technology.

If you're having trouble getting your toddler to cooperate with getting dressed, try finding a picture book where the main character has to get dressed. Encourage your child to act along with the book, and turn getting dressed into a game. Toddlers are more willing to do things when they are fun.

As recognized in the beginning of this article, it really can take a lot to be a parent, maybe sometimes, more than you may think you have. But somehow, you make it through and are ready for the demands of the next day. By using the advice in this article, you can, indeed, make it through yet another day.
