Discover the Cyprus wineries

by Catherine McCulloch

Growing in chalky soil under the hot Mediterranean sun but cooled by the mountain breeze, the vineyards in Cyprus have long produced wines of excellence thanks to this unique terroir. But whilst the industry may have been out of the spotlight for some time now, a new generation of winemakers is leading the way to revive this ancient tradition. Sun and sea have long been the country's calling card, but Cyprus holidays would not be complete without a taste of the locally produced wine. This is why many of the wineries across the island, from boutique wineries to large corporations, are opening their doors to the public to provide an insight into their winemaking philosophies.

One winery eager to promote its wines to the world is the Tsangarides Winery, easily one of the most beautiful wineries in the region. Located in the Lemona valley at the foot of the Troodos Mountains - largely considered the heart of the island's wine regions - this family-run winery blends traditional methods with state-of-the-art technology.

Tsiakkas Winery in Pelendri is another must-see on holidays in Cyprus, as it is notorious for its family heritage, grapevines and top notch wine. Producing eight different types with local grapes, the Tsiakkas wine cellar is well worth a visit with daily tours taking place so you can sample a glass or two.

Open every day from 10am to 5pm, Vouni Panayia near Panayia Village offers wine tours and tastings of its seven labels, made with traditional grapes such as Xinisteri (for the whites) and Maratheftko and Mavro (for the reds). Using the least amount of chemicals as possible, the producers here believe in an organic approach to winemaking and even have their own organic vegetable garden on site. And with thousands of fir trees planted all over the hills providing welcome fresh air, reaching the winery itself is no less appealing. In fact, stunning surroundings and beautiful countryside are what holidays in Cyprus are made of.

Located in the southern region of the Troodos Mountains, the Zambartas Winery is the oldest vineyard region of Cyprus, the winemakers have lovingly created a project that will make cheap holidays to Cyprus complete. Featuring a beautiful wine-tasting area to sample Zambartas' award-winning wines and an al fresco area in development, the winery provides tours and guided wine tasting by the winemakers, complemented by seasonal fruit, cheese and cold cuts. Able to cater for groups of up to 30 people, the winery can also organise wine and gourmet food evenings.
