Stair Safety: How to Avoid Accidents with Your Toddler on the Stairs

by Pamela Noble

We love that our toddlers have an abundance of energy and curiosity, but this combination can lead to mischief and accidents. The stairs in particular offers a reliable source of wonder and excitement for a baby, it is frequently a place children will return to time after time to climb. Naturally, this poses a challenge to the parents out there trying to stop any accidents and injuries in their homes.

The key to preventing accidents on the steps is predicting possible incidents and knowing their children's behavior. There are many ways you can keep your toddlers from the steps and teach them safe staircase behaviour when it's time to go up and down.

Blocking the stairs

The sole sure way to ensure your baby isn't going to suffer an accident on the steps is to limit access to them altogether. Install a strong, hardware mounted baby gate at the top and/or bottom of the stairway. Test the gate before putting it to use by putting pressure on the gate and giving it 1 or 2 good heaves to be certain it can withstand considerable weight. Toddlers can be incredibly strong when determined, and a loose gate will do the opposite of safeguarding the steps.

Teach them to steer clear

Teach your toddler the steps are off limits, unless they're with a parent or guardian. If you see your child heading for the steps, tell them a firm "no" and distract their attention with toys and fun away from the steps. Each time your toddler heads for the steps, repeat this action. Ultimately your kid will know that the stairs are for use only with your permission.

General safety

Keep toys and other items your kid could use as a stepping stone to climb over the baby gate or railing. If you have older children who use the stairs also , you might consider obstructing the distance between the railing and the upper floor to stop falls. Make sure the banister and railings are secure and robust. If your stairs are not carpeted, avoid slips by placing non-slip stickers or mats on the steps to provide traction. Always watch over your toddlers when they are on or close to the steps. Be sure to establish safety rules for using the stairs and stress that the stairs are not a safe place to play.

Being watchful and anticipating potential accidents before they happen is what safety is all about. Always be looking for ways to make your house a safer place for you and your family.
