Four Tips for Gymnastics Grips Care

by John Cox

Gymnastics Grips are an essential piece of gymnastics equipment. Most gymnasts start using gymnastics grips at level 4 and up.

Holding power and protection are provided by grips. Good working condition grips require you to know how to care for them.

Here's practical tips for grip care in four steps

#1 Inspect possible wear and tear

Small tears or weak points can develop causing a safety hazard. Inspect your grips before and

after practice, examining closely any tears or weak points around the buckle, strap, or wrist.

Construing comfortable leather as weak is wrong. Soft leather is meant to wrap around the bar and fit your hand. But if the

leather is wearing thin and you're unsure, ask a coach to inspect it for you. If you see a small tear in the leather, it's likely the tear will

continue to grow. At the sign of any tear of any size on any part of the grip, we recommend discarding the grips. It's better to always error on the safe side.

#2 Wrap em

New gymnastics grips should be wrapped up for 24 hours before use. Simply roll the leather around the dowel starting with the finger tip edge first.

Wrapping the grips around themselves you're essentially securing them with a rubber band or piece of string. This will break in the leather

hard leather down making the grips flexible. Flexible leather conforms nicely to the human hand. This process should be repeated until the grips

sit against the palm at rest and feel comfortable. Once the leather is broken in this process can be stopped. Wrapping should last one to two weeks.

#3 Dust them

After each practice session excess chalk can build up on gymnastics grips. Compacted chalk in the leather due to the high amount of pressure

can be a problem. Chalk build up could cause the leather to become stiff if you allow it. Remove excess chalk by

brushing it off. Similar to a dog brush, gymnasts will use a grip brush with semi rigid bristles. If out of a grip brush

stiff tooth brush would work if you take your time. It's important to stay away from the stitching as the brush could cut or damage it rendering the

unsafe grips. Brush back and forth the length of the grips.

#4 Keep in safe storage

It's important to protect gymnastics grips when not in use. To keep grips from getting ruined in transport, store grips in a separate bag. Any

grips can weaken with a spill of water or soda on them. To be safe, and to keep any doubts from entering, remembering

to keep your other clothing and equipment free of chalk dust from your grips. A separate storage bag is another benefit stopping scent from absorbing into other items in your backpack.

Ensuring you have a quality pair of gymnastics grips available when you need them is a result of following these 4 tips.
