Alternative workouts appeal to people who need variety when it comes to working out. If you want to improve your fitness or lose weight, what's important is that you exercise regularly. This is a type of exercise anyone, from a very athletic person to someone who's completely out of shape can benefit from, as it accommodates all levels.

They also have the advantage of being portable and taking up far less room than an exercise machine. Your workout will definitely be greatly enhanced as you build muscle and staying power doing this one exercise.

There's no better or more fun way to work out than by riding a bike. This gives you a fun and strenuous way to spend time outdoors and get a thorough workout. Riding a bike in a city, the suburbs or on mountain trails is a nice alternative to just pedaling in place at the fitness center. Many people enjoy the challenge of mountain biking, and these sturdy bikes are made to withstand uneven and difficult trails. A racing bike or hybrid would be more appropriate for the city or suburbs, and if you're lucky you live somewhere that has bike lanes. There's probably a bicycle store somewhere near you, and if not many large box stores sell a good selection that you can check out.

There are many health benefits to swimming, and while it's too well known to be truly "alternative," the majority of people don't take advantage of it as a way to stay in shape consistently. This is especially the case if you don't live close to a body of water or own a swimming pool. Most areas, however, have indoor or outdoor swimming pools, whether it's at a health club, YMCA or the closest university. When you swim, you use every part of your body, and the water provides natural resistance. Many people find that swimming is a great way to relieve stress and it can even be meditative. If you've never really learned how to swim, it's never too late, as anywhere there's a pool you can find adult swimming lessons or classes. There are many alternatives when it comes to exercising. When you open your mind and investigate, you'll find that there are an almost endless number of ways to exercise. If you find yourself getting bored with exercise, or have trouble starting in the first place, consider some of these alternative workouts and you may find an activity that's ideal for you.
