5 Things To Keep In Mind When Drawing Hands

by Manci Zeelgal

The hand is a very difficult thing to draw. It is a very intricate area of study and you can spend many years devoted to studying it alone. There are many great books out there on the topic of drawing hands and you should read some of them.

In this article, I am going to condense what I've learn about drawing hands into a few pointers that will help you in your effort.

The items in this list are actually quite simple (and they were meant to be) but many beginners still miss them.

Just remember these key points while you drawing your hands and you will benefit greatly from them.

Let's get to it:

Things To Remember When Sketching Hands

Number 1: Hands are NOT made up of straight lines...fingers are NOT parallel to each other, knuckles DON'T line up in a row, and the edges of the hand are NOT straight and parallel.

The lines that make up your hands are curved and filled with little imperfections. Do not try to draw your fingers with straight line. Instead try to curve the line a little.

Remember this and try to reflect it in your drawing.

Number 2: There are 3 parts to your hand: the base of the thumb, the meaty part at the bottom of your pinky, and the row that is positioned beneath your knuckles.

Number 3: Make sure that when you draw the web of the fingers (or the skin that connects each fingers) that you draw them as a "U" shape, rather than a hard "V" shape.

Number 4: The hand naturally curls towards itself. It doesn't just lay flat when you relax it.

The muscles and tendons inside the hand pulls on it and cause it to behave this way. When drawing a relaxed figure, make sure that his hand is slightly curled.

Number 5: When drawing the back side of the hand, always remember to include these 3 things: the knuckles, the veins, the wrinkles at the joints of the finger

Now you have a very good mental check list of what to look for when drawing hands. To further you knowledge, I recommend you go find some good drawing books.

You have to see examples after examples in order for this to really sink in. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words.
