Soil Structure and Composition

by Castulo Zane

You might find the structure of soil interesting. What we think of as soil is actually about 50% empty space. Forty five percent is weathered rock. That leaves only five percent for organic matter.

What the soil is made of is the soil composition. Soils can be predominantly clay, silt, or sand, for example. The differing components in the soil will influence its properties.

If you understand structure and composition you can create a soil that will preform really well and be suited to what you want to grow. Doubling the amount of organic matter is simple, as we're only moving from 5% to 10%. At the same time can understand that we need to maintain lots of empty space for roots, and the passage of air and water.

Different plants like different environments. A plant that thrives in wet, acid soil won't do well in dry, alkaline soil. For marijuana to thrive you need light, well drained soil with a ph in between 5.9 and 6.4.

Clearly, what you want is a soil with a ph of about 6.0, that drains well. You can try to make this out of any old soil, but the chances of getting all three features is slim. Commercial soil blends are very good, but not exactly what you require. The easiest solution is to make your own soil.

This isn't magic. A soil with good compositions and good structure is what we're looking for. There are lots of recipes on the internet that will help you achieve this.

The foundation can be a regular potting soil. Perlite is a good addition for improving drainage. Adding peat moss will improve the soil's ability to hold some moisture.

To increase the nutrients available you can add organic materials. Mixing in manure (chicken, steer or horse) helps, as does compost or worm castings. Make sure that manures have had time to rot - they can be too strong of very fresh. Before planting check your ph of the finished product.
