Shutterbug's Essential Guide To Better Photography Skills

by Cordell David Sanchez

Photography is a great way to capture moments in your life that move you and the beauty of your world. With some effort and education, you can even turn a passion for photography into a source of income. When you learn your camera's settings, the effects of various features and lighting, you will be able to produce interesting photographs.

Experiment a little with the focus to create interesting pictures. Reduce the f-stop setting to maintain focus on the closer subject. This type of photography is great for portraits, because the subject is usually near the camera and is meant to be the main focus. In contrast, increasing your f-stop setting will also increase the field depth and bring all elements of the photograph into focus in a more even manner. Use this feature when taking panoramic or landscape pictures.

Pictures that you take in a low light situation tend to turn out very blurry. Brace yourself or make sure your hand is as steady as it can be if you're taking pictures in low lighting. Resting your hands on something can steady them. Serious photographers accomplish these shots by using tripods.

When working with a digital camera, it is often tempting to switch to the lowest setting, so you can get additional pictures in memory before you download them; just make sure you know the print quality will suffer when doing this. You should only apply the lowest settings if you are confident that the images will only be shown on a computer display.

Do not let a great shot go by because you were too busy adjusting your settings. On the other hand, you do not want a preset, which allows your camera to choose all the settings. Know your camera well and use the settings that allow you to have the most control over your shots while still allowing you to adjust them in an easy and timely manner.

Imagine your view finder is cut into thirds divided horizontally and vertically. Instead of placing your subject in the dead center of the frame, place it where the lines cross. You'll easily create a more dramatic picture.

A silhouette can look lovely in any picture. A lot of photographer wait until the sunset to take pictures of a natural silhouette, but you can do it differently. If the difference in lighting between the subject and background is significant, with the background being brighter, it will create a silhouette. It's easy to create a silhouette by simply getting behind the subject with an off-camera flash. Alternatively, you could place the subject in front of a window that has light streaming through. Be sure, however, that the resulting outline gives a flattering depiction of the subject.

Your camera has a feature called focus-lock, and you should take the time to learn how to use it. This setting allows you to lock on items which are off-center, changing the focus of your photograph. Usually, you do this by depressing the shutter button halfway, with the subject in the center, then moving the camera so that the shot is framed how you like. Push the shutter button down all the way to take the picture.

There are all kinds of things inside your home and outside that can create phenomenal pictures, if you unleash your creative side. Always try new things and do not be scared to experiment. Start snapping with your camera.

As you have read in the article from above, there is no reason why you cannot become great at photography, possibly even making a successful career out of it too. Taking photographs is more involved than just snapping. You are taking a subject and creating an immortal image that encompasses the natural beauty and artistic value of your subjects.
