Modern Warfare 3: The Multiplayer Mode

by Mark Watson

Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer is an arena fraught with challenges and other features that will often frustrate the newcomer and even annoy more experienced gamers. For a start, there are far more guns in this game than there are in other similar titles, and every decision you make in terms of how you choose to equip your player will affect how your player performs in battle.

The booklet included with the game only gives a very fleeting description of the multiplayer mode, including a Heads Up Display or "HUD", and this will be all an inexperienced player has to go on as they enter the daunting arena that is Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer, potentially confused by the vast array of weapon and equipment options presented to them and often going into battle ill-prepared for what lies in wait as the loading bar reaches the right hand side of the screen.

As an example of the huge difference using the correct and wrong equipment can make, if a player is in an area infested with hostiles, using a Portable Radar can help a player to track down and get the jump on said enemies, racking up the kills, whereas a Tactical Insertion will more than likely cost a player an extra death should they get killed, as enemies will more often wait near a Tactical Insertion and pounce on the unfortunate victim upon their respawn before they can react.

Perks are also key to success, as they can do everything from speed up your reload, to boost your ammunition supply to help you avoid a humiliating or frustrating death on someone's planted explosives. It is very useful to know each one, what it does, and also how to counter some of the perks enemies may possess which are designed to hinder your progress or keep you from finding them.

When a player achieves a measure of success and earns one or more Pointstreaks, picking the right ones to suit can be a major difference maker. Using aerial pointstreaks, such as the Reaper, on maps with a lot of buildings is ineffective and the effort would be better spent earning a ground-based streak like the Assault Drone, which can be driven into buildings. Even more vital is picking pointstreaks a player can achieve; it's no good picking the AC130 when there's no chance of getting a 12 point streak without dying.

With this as a starting point, it gives an idea of the amount of knowledge that is needed to truly thrive in the world of Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer.
