How to Make Sure You Buy the Right Size Wetsuit

by Piers L Conran

Once you have the size and fit of your wetsuit correct - snug but not like a straight jacket - you can move on to the additional features of suits such as the material thickness, flexibility, zip type and seam type. These additional features can make a huge difference to both warmth and comfort. If you're buying a wetsuit for use in cold water, don't expect it to be cheap, to keep you nice and warm you'll need some of the best seams and zips so cold water doesn't come in too often.

The seams make a big difference to the warmth and comfort of the wetsuit. There are seams which are inwardly visible (like clothing seams) which could have a tendency to rub, such as the overlock stitch. This is the cheapest type of stitching and quite a bit of water will seep through. For a more watertight seal you will want blindstitched or fluid sealed seams. These are glued first, and then stitched meaning very little water will get through this type of seam.

Once you've sorted out the fit of your suit there are still a lot of other factors to consider. The things that are going to make the difference are the thickness, the seams, the closure, and the flexibility. Wetsuits come in around 5 fabric-thickness variations. The thickness you need will depend on the water temperatures you're surfing in. A standard wetsuit will be 3/2 thickness, meaning for 3mm in the torso and 2mm in the extremities, this is suitable for water between 15 and 20C, going right up to really thick suits of 6/4 for water temperatures below 7C.

Many good wetsuit manufacturers now produce a range of women's fit wetsuits to suit a range of female figures. These include features such as a lower neckline for better fit and comfort, an extended zipper length to accommodate wider hips and to make taking the suit on and off easier, smaller wrist and ankle holes than on the male wetsuits, and better shaping around the waist and bust.

As you can see, there are many features to consider when choosing a wetsuit and the choosing of these is very personal to both you and the type of sea you will be in such as how cold and rough it is. However, the most important feature of a wetsuit is definitely the right fit, so get this right first, then worry about the extras.
