Apartment Gardening? Yes, It is Possible!

by Aisha Dibenedetto

It's interesting to note how many people can't imagine having a garden while living in an apartment. You have to deal with limited space and shared walls, as well as common areas. How can you know for sure someone won't mess with your plants? It's possible that you may have a balcony off of your apartment, but the opposite is also true. People who love plants and enjoy gardening stay away from living in apartments because of this perceived limitation. Nevertheless, if you are an apartment dweller, there are many methods you can employ to have and enjoy a variety of plants. Our focus in this report is to open your eyes to the possibilities of gardening in a small apartment or other limited space.

If you already have containers, or know what kind you want to purchase, pick plants that are suitable for these containers. There are many plants - such as African Violets - that can be grown in small containers and others, like a Split Leaf Philodendron, that require larger pots. By deciding on the containers and pots first, you can control the unique effect your garden will present. What's the point of only buying big pots when you can grow a smaller plant or flower that is just as attractive?

To learn how to successfully do container gardening, you just have to do a little research and you will find all the information you need.

It's a good idea to purchase grow lights for your plants. You probably have preconceived notions about what people use grow lights for. The truth is that anybody whose access to direct sunlight is limited will probably need to invest in at least a grow light or two.

These lights help you grow your plants indoors and on balconies that are shady all day long. Brand new grow lights can sometimes be expensive but, if you search the thrift shops and garage sales or flea markets, you will probably find used ones that will work well for your garden.

A wonderful alternative, if you simply cannot find any extra space in your home for containers, is to see if there are any community gardens in your area that you can participate in. Many of these operate on a time share or monthly fee. Imagine the joy you will have with an outdoor plot of your own to grow whatever you want without impacting the space in your apartment. Your first choice might be to put a small garden in your apartment. However, if you truthfully evaluate that idea, and it just won't work, don't rule out being part of a community garden.

Don't subscribe to the false notion that you cannot enjoy your own garden because your living quarters are small. Just exercise your imagination a little and you will think of numerous ways you, too, can have a garden even if you don't have a balcony or patio. All that is required is your imagination, research into gardening indoors, and the time to implement your creative ideas and you, too, will have a bountiful garden, even if your space and finances are limited.
