Fine Art - Discover How To Add Real Oil Paintings On Canvas To Your Collection

by Sue Ellis

When you find an oil painting that you like on canvas, it is most likely one that "speaks" to you. The enjoyable factor is an excellent reason to buy the painting. You may be worried about the authenticity, in which case you should consult an expert. Old paintings can be deceptive if you want a true original.

How can I tell if it's worth the money?

Just because the oil painting is done on canvas and is a reproduction of an original fine art piece, it is not necessarily a good investment. Some reproductions of original old art are just not worth the money it takes to buy them. An art expert can tell you if the price is a good investment or not. The expert should prove their qualifications with credentials. You can also consult this expert when you find art at a yard sale. As an expert, they will probably have a history degree and therefore they will be able to give you the background of the piece.

Where do you find an art expert to give an appraisal?

You can find art professional at antique shops or the phone book. Finding a good appraiser will not only insure that you are making a wise investment but they will provide you with a certified appraisal showing the authenticity of the fine art piece and its value. This will come in handy if you're planning to make it a charitable contribution on your taxes.

Is it a good investment to buy pieces from new artists?

Many new artists will be discovered and become well-known over time. There are two main types of new artists; guild artists, and folk artists. A guild artist will pay for a membership to an art community or have an art degree, while the folk artist learned on their own. You might find a sponsored guild member, but the membership is usually for degree holders. The value of the investment is not dependent on the artist being guild vs. folk.

Where to find new artists:

You can look into sales held by the local civic centers, estate auctions, art galleries, and even hospitals for quality art. You might even find a fine restaurant with art they are trying to sell. You may have some luck at yard sales, as well, because people may not know the real value of their art. Reproduced art pieces can be found online like eBay auctions offering literally thousands of choices at a wide range of pricing.

What might I pay for an oil painting?

This is a difficult question because art ranges so variously in prices. If the investment is on the high end of the spectrum, talk to an expert. Just because a piece is not very pricey or on the other hand if it is extremely expensive does not really determine the value of the investment.
