Burn Prevention and Your Baby

by Pamela Noble

Burn wounds account for a large fraction of the reported accidents in the home, among small children. The common kind of burn in babies and toddlers are scalds caused by hot liquids or steam. Scalds may cause all three kinds of burns from first degree burns to third degree burns. The degree varies with the severity of burn and damage to tissue.

Many burns are treatable with minor first aid in the home, while more serious burns require a visit to the ER. The better news with this sort of injury is that in most cases it is completely preventable by exercising caution, awareness and taking safety measures to ensure your baby doesn't make contact with anything with the potential to cause a burn.

The following are safety tips you can use to prevent burns in your home:

Baby-Specific Safety Tips

Make sure the water temperature is safe on baby's skin before placing in a bath. Use a thermometer to be completely sure you know the accurate temperature.

Check the temperature on your wrist before feeding your baby heated milk. Avoid using the microwave to heat the milk as it can easily warm it to a dangerous temperature.

Lower the temperature of your home's hot water heater to 120 degrees to stop contact burns.

Keep electrical cords and any objects which risk electrocution out of the child's reach. Cover electric outlets.

Use baby safety gates to block off unsafe areas and objects such as the stove, fireplace and furnace.

Don't carry anything hot, or walk near anything hot while holding your child.

General Safety Tips

Keep unsafe objects such as matches, chemicals, cigarettes, lighters, candles and any flames safely out your child's access.

When placing a humidifier or vaporiser in your home, utilize a cool mist model and avoid the steam versions.

Place space heaters cautiously, well away from where your kid can play.

Use extreme care with risky items like sparklers and fireworks.

Do not use irons, hair straighteners, curling irons, or any other heated appliance, near your youngster.

Always keep a tight watch on your baby. This is the best way of stopping an injury or accident. There's no substitute for the protective eye of a concientious guardian.
