The World of Dance on Film

by Eloise J Allerton

Dance has always been used in movies as a popular form of expression. Whether dance is the main theme of the movie or whether it is simply used in the movie as is regularly done in musical movies such as Hairspray or Grease, it is certain that dance has been a very popular medium through which film makers have been able to express their characters' personalities.

The inimitable Gene Kelly starred in several theatre productions as well as many movies in his time but is perhaps most celebrated in the classic 1952 movie "Singing in the Rain". "Singing in the Rain" is well known throughout the world and it would be impossible to count the number of times that people have paid homage to it in other films and TV shows.

In 1987 came what for many people consider still to be the greatest dancing movie of all time, Dirty Dancing. The success of this movie owed itself mainly due to the fact that the actors chosen for it, such as the unforgettable Patrick Swayze, were chosen as much for their dancing ability as for their acting prowess. Dirty Dancing still maintains cult status amongst many people and its story is almost timeless.

If we fast-forward another 23 years from Dirty Dancing and in to more modern dance movies, we come across the British movie Street Dance 3D, the film was popular in the UK as it starred several well-known dancers and dance groups from the TV show Britain's Got Talent and it showed that modern street dance is not out of place in the movie industry either.

Having success at the box office is dependent on many things and the films mentioned above (as well as other smash dance movies such as Billy Elliott) are no exception. The ability to engage the audience through dance in these movies is paramount to the movies' success. Dancing has been and will continue to be used as a medium in which directors can make successful movies for a global audience.
