The Geisha Costume- A Dress Like No Other
by Freddy McCandless
The power of a woman that is expressed in the most gentle and sensual way is what a geisha is all about. Smart, spectacular, mysterious all in one. All of the skills that they have learned through years of training help keep them subdued while they are in fact very powerful.
The geisha is a famous representation of the culture of Japan. Men want them and women actually want to be them. Japanese Geisha costumes that make these women look differently are made up of the following:
1. When it comes to the traditional makeup for a Japanese geisha, you will absolutely have a white base, dark eyes and brows, and red lips. Geishas have to study this art for years. A Japanese geisha begins with an oil or binstsule-abura then followed by a white powder paste. Only part of the lips have color, for full pledged geishas, they only do this on the upper lip. This heavy makeup is carried by the maiko for give or take three years but with the help of a mentor and even the mother of the geisha house.
2. A geisha always dresses using a colorful kimono with pocketed sleeves called furi. There are in fact different ways for the obi to be tied next. There is the Kyoto darari style or the Tokyo hangyoku style. The Taiko musubi style is certainly for adult traditional geishas. When it comes to the kimono, there are different styles for different events. Then they either put on zori, which is a pair of flat soled sandals for when outdoors, or tabi, which are white split toed socks that are perfect for indoors. Geishas wear wooden clogs called geta while maikos have okobos.
3. You have the traditional shimada or the chignon as their hairstyles both but up with stunning pins as well as combs. There are in fact four kinds of shimadas for different Japanese geishas- you have one for the younger ladies, one for the older ones, one for the maikos, and one that uses a lot of colorful cotton crepes. Some traditional geishas even use wigs, however, maikos have to use their own hair.
Traditional Japanese Geisha costume looks so gorgeous. It is a unique symbol to a special set of cultured Japanese women.
