The Villanova Wildcats slumped badly down the stretch in Big East play but had hoped that a 'step down in class' in the opening round of the NCAA tournament would improve their fortunes. It didn't work out that way. George Mason University started to evoke comparisons to the school's 2006 Final Four team by erasing a six point halftime deficit to eliminate Villanova by a 61-57 final score. Luke Hancock hit a decisive three point basket with 21 seconds to play to cap the Patriots' comeback and end a season that started with a lot of promise for Big East entrant Villanova.
College basketball gambling enthusiasts have made money with George Mason all season long, and this consequence was no different as the Patriots cashed tickets with their outright victory as a +2 underdog. GMU has been a real license to print money for point spread players this year-with the win the Patriots improved to 23-8 ATS overall and 12-5 ATS against opponents with winning records. GMU has covered 10 of their last 11 games against adversaries with winning records. Villanova were a huge money loser in the final part of the season-- the Wildcats finished the season on a 6 game SU losing streak and a 10 game point spread losing streak. Villanova lost 10 of their last 14 SU going 1-13 against the spread down the stretch.
Follow the game, Luke Hancock dismissed comparisons to Mason's 2006 Final Four team:
"We're evaluating to do our own thing. Make our own name."
He didn't try to sugarcoat his feelings as he took what would eventually be the game winning shot:
"I was kind of hoping and praying."
Teammate Mike Morrison echoed Hancock's thoughts:
"This is our team here, two different years and two different teams. We are proving to do what we have to do for ourselves."
Villanova coach Jay Wright was in a situation of disbelief:
"He made a big-time shot. It doesn't shock me."
Corey Stokes' post game comments resonance a bit ridiculous in light of Villanova's horrible play in the second half of the season:
"In no way we expected to go out like this. I'm proud of my teammates. We played our hearts out.
We ignore shots. They played great defense down the stretch."
George Mason coach Jim Larranaga in addition to addressed comparisons to his 2006 team:
"They don't wish this tournament to be just one-and-done. They want to make memories of their own. They want to do things that the '06 team did, but they weren't on the '06 team. They're alert on being the greatest that they can be this year."
Next up for the Patriots is a tough challenge against #1 seeded Ohio State. With a victory there, they'll advance to a 'Sweet 16' matchup against North Carolina in Newark, NJ later this week.
