When I first started dyeing fabric, it was because the line of clothes that I had made for sale at the apparel mart had been taken by someone that had seen them in a fashion show the evening before. They'd broken into my showroom over the night and the following morning I arrived to find the garments were gone. The fabrics I was using at the time were available in the fabric stores so I lost a lot that season. I chose to learn surface design to avoid having that happen again and fabric dyeing was a part of that educational process. I fell completely in love with the fantastic thing about the colors, the textures of the mottles, and the unlimited color chances.
I developed my personal easy inexpensive way of dyeing where there were not any wasted supplies yet the results are fabulous and washer-friendly which became a successful line of clothing designs that were one of a kind clothing. I wrote steps for the students in my fabric dyeing workshops who found interest in learning what I had done. Having directions from someone who has been there-done that should help you in avoiding plenty of the normal situations many face when they decide to dye fabrics.
You must decide what sort of dyeing you want to do. This really appears foolish in the beginning, but each type of fabric has a different approach and kind of dye so you may totally have to understand this bit of knowledge before it's possible to move forward. I usually like to dye cotton in yarns and fabrics and mix them into my jackets so for me Procion MX dye is the one I have used the most. I do a bunch of other fibers but again every one of them has to have the dye and system that works best with that fiber.
Recipes are an important part of the dyeing process if you're expecting to get another batch of the same or an identical color. I keep an extensive recipe collection so I'm able to quickly dye another run of that color if I get an order for that color group.
You'll find the right fabric, system and recipes that'll be for the projects you want to used dyed fabrics in as well with just a little of experimenting on your time. Color harmony is also a very important part of the dyeing process so you will want to add a little bit of that to your educational process to help quickly get to the results which you want and use the dyed fabrics in your projects.
