If you're looking to buy a home embroidery machine|, you may be confused by all the different models and features on the market. You need to spend some time thinking about what you want to do with it and which features are the most important to you.
Here are some of the essential features in home embroidery machines that make a difference in how you use the machine.
Combination Sewing And Embroidery VS Embroidery Only Machines
Some embroidery machines can only embellish, but not mend or sew garments. Even if you don't want to sew, you can buy things like clothes, towels, sheets, table mats -- almost anything -- and have fun adding a personal touch with embroidery. Or if you have a good sewing machine, a separate machine just for embroidery could be just what you want.
A combination machine can both sew and embroider. It's a regular computerized sewing machine with all the features and sewing stitches you need for constructing garments, quilts, and other projects. Plus it can embroider. A combination machine is for you if you want a sewing machine too, if you want to upgrade your old sewing machine, or if your space is limited and you want both functions in one machine.
Is It User-Friendly?
Look first at the buttons and control screen. Is it easy to select the design you want to stitch? How easy is it to import additional designs? Do the graphics and sequences make sense to you? Is it easy to understand the menus?
In addition to user-friendly controls, some machines have features such as automatic threading, bobbin handling, and/or thread cutting that can make using the machine easier and much more enjoyable.
Maximum Area Of The Embroidery Field
Embroidery machines stitch inside a field or frame. This size is a physical limitation of the machine and it can't stitch outside this area even with a larger hoop. Therefore, this is the largest design that you can stitch at one time.
A lot of 4x4 inch embroidery patterns are available on the Internet, but some designs require a 5x7 inch or even larger frame. The most important consideration is what kind of things you want to embroider and your budget. Do you like large designs on large objects or smaller projects? Many people start out with a 4x4 inch field because of cost, but then soon wish for a larger embroidery frame. So think carefully about this.
Importing Embroidery Designs
No matter how many build-in patterns a machine has, you're going to want something special sooner or later. You can find a large variety of free and reasonably priced patterns to suit every project and taste. But you need a way to get them into the machine for stitching.
Many older and low-end machines are limited to reading special memory cards. In addition to a card slot, some machines have a USB port for easily importing additional designs. There are two types: One allows you to connect the machine to your computer for transferring designs. The other type of USB port which is my favorite method accepts a thumb or flash drive. You copy the designs to the thumb drive from your computer and then stick the drive into the embroidery machine for stitching.
Value For Money And Your Budget
With the modern advances in technology, some of the more affordable machines offer features previously found only in the high-end machines. The higher-end machines tend to be faster, better made (fewer plastic parts), and perform more functions. But you may not need all of these features and some will be more important to you than others.
If you're in the market for a high-end machine costing thousands of dollars, you should find a reliable dealer that offers good training and support, and see what he recommends.
