Kids can be picky eaters who refuse to try a new food at least half the time. About half of all children fit this description, so it's no wonder that food issues are a source of stress for parents. The setting of healthy eating patterns is important to avoid problems such as obesity and eating disorders in the future. Various strategies can help your child accept a wider range of foods. You might need to provide food for your child to 10 different times before choosing to eat. The problem is that many parents are frustrated and give up before trying to fourth or fifth.
Make food fun. Colorful meals like carrot sticks, raisins, apples, grapes, cheese sticks and crackers can be fun and healthy choices for your growing child. Tell them that good food is important for what will grow big and strong, and how they help them run faster and play longer
Children learn behaviors from their parents. If you are limited to a narrow range of foods, your child will take notice and mimic your caution. Do not limit your child a variety of diet foods you prefer. It may be that your child's tastes are different than yours, and may simply serve them food that does not happen to like them. Try to set a good example and treat a variety of food in front of his son. Can motivate them to do the same.
If your child seems healthy and energetic, then you are eating enough. If you're still concerned, keep an eye on the amount of food eaten during the day. Children tend to graze constantly, rather than limit their intake to three meals per day as adults. You will be amazed how small bunches and snacks add up. For security, check your child's growth and weight charts, or check with your child's pediatrician.
Try not to worry, and remember, that unless a kid is sick, they eat. Kids are very good at judging the hunger and signs of fullness. Try to be relaxed about mealtime and offer your child a variety of foods, and most importantly, remember to a good working example in treating a wide range of foods yourself. You may find you share with your child a new food found favorite!
