Before sewing machines like the Pfaff sewing machines were invented, people only use leather and furs which they warp around themselves and used as protection from cold weathers. This changed when people started to learn how to sew and create clothes which can provide better protection to them. From hand sewn clothes sewing became mechanical with the invention of the sewing machine. These sewing machines are now continuously being developed to include computerized technology and are one of the most important tools in sewing.
As mentioned earlier, before sewing was even learned by our ancestors, the practice or wrapping fur of leather around their bodies using a cord or leather was widely popular. This however changes when people started living in cold Central Asia in 45,000 BC and sewing became widespread. The need for warmer and better clothing in order to protect for cold weather conditions lead to the use of awls which are described as sharp pointed sticks and stone tools used to poke holes in clothes. The hole is where the cord runs through instead of around a person's body. Awls were still used up until 40,000 BC.
Awls were modified and designed with a hole at the end where the cord can be threaded by 40,000 BC. This started the era of modern sewing and made sewing a lot easier. These days, sewing is not only part creating clothes but also play a major role in shoemaking, upholstery, sail making, bookbinding, as well as in a variety of textile arts and crafts such as embroidery, tapestry, quilting, applique, and patchwork. The discovery of the modern needle further revolutionized sewing which further lead to the invention of sewing machines like the Pfaff sewing machines.
It was during the 1850s when the first marketable sewing machine was launched in the market by inventor Isaac Singer. Nonetheless, it was in 1755 when the first patent for a sewing machine was issue to Charles Weisenthal. However, little is known about Weisenthal's machine except that it was designed for a needle meant to be used in mechanical sewing. Over the years, various people attempted to create a working sewing machine but none succeeded. It was in 1830 when the first functional sewing machine was created by French tailor Barthelemy Thimmonier. Thimmoniers' machine was then later improved by Isaac Singer and Singer's machines became known as Singer sewing machine as we know today.
There are a number of sewing machine brands available in the market today. Some of the more notable brands in the market include the Singer sewing machines and the Pfaff sewing machines. There are generally four types of sewing machine, namely, mechanical, electronic, computerized, and sergers. The most common type of sewing machines are the mechanical types which use spring loaded cam that is pushed and pulled by the device to make various kinds of stitches. The second type of sewing machine is the electronic sewing machine which uses use electrical impulses to shoot and return the needle into the correct place on the fabric and to create patterns. There are also the computerized sewing machines which are very much the same as the electrical sewing machine except that they use microprocessors giving them the ability to accept new information from a memory card. Sewing machines which are finishing devices that consist of loopers and knives that acts like a pair of scissors to tidy up any errant stitches are called sergers which are also the fourth type of sewing machine.
Revolutionized clothing has definitely been started by the invention of the sewing machines. Sewing machines such as the Pfaff sewing machines have undergone many technological improvements and many more in the coming years.
