How to Choose the Best Baby Monitors

by Miriam G Price

The American SIDS Institute stated that the rate of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS or cot death) in the United States has lowered by 50% since 1983. On the contrary, there are still about 2,000+ deaths brought about by SIDS every single year inside the U.S. and this statistic is a definite reminder to why baby monitors are so important for soon-to-be-parents. And you'll find plenty of the best baby monitors available.

Throughout my first pregnancy, I enforced it upon myself to choose the right baby monitor to make sure that I won't undergo some distressing nights just thinking if my baby is still breathing or not. And with that, I was glad to acquire the Snuza Halo baby monitor. It's full functionalities was what I had been searching for in a baby monitor, for example, it easily fits on to the baby's diaper, it is portable - you can use it indoors and also while travelling, uses battery - no cords or adaptors required.

But the main highlight of the Snuza Halo baby monitor is its capability to detect the slightest movement. Let me illustrate to you the alert sequence provided by this baby monitor:

Once the movements of the baby are very weak or fall short to eight movements a minute, the baby monitor will alert the parents or babysitter. That is very convenient for any parent as it eliminates any type of paranoia they may have of ever wondering whether something has really happened to their child or maybe their baby is really just sleeping.

If the monitor does not detect any movement of the baby for a period of 15 seconds, the Snuza Halo Baby Monitor will gently vibrate causing the baby to rouse and stir. The monitor will then revert to monitoring mode.

The Rouse Warning will alert the parents if there will be three vibration/rouse incidents. This may be annoying at times but necessary as well. This is the only option to keep your baby alert without waking them up.

The alarm, which some find noisy, will alert parents, if there's no movement detected from the baby for the next 5 seconds following the initial 15 seconds of non detection. That is another necessary feature and you'll always be able to set the alarm times according to your preference.

My second child basically used the same baby monitor. I merely sent the old baby monitor to Snuza and so they substituted it with a completely new one only for only $20 or something. This, in my opinion, is a good bonus and is probably their own little way of showing their appreciation for their loyal clients. I really don't mind needing to pay more with this particular baby monitor when compared with other so-called best baby monitors.
