The Nintendo DS has been with us for a few years now and it is still the number on handheld device out there. Nintendo was able to sell 149 million units of the DS while Sony only managed half of that number with the PSP. This proves that Nintendo is still number one when it comes to handheld devices. And with the Nintendo DSi which is the third version of the DS, have had a lot of welcome improvements too.
The Nintendo DSi has a lot in common with the DS Lite from shape and form factor to screen size. But the biggest improvements are what are inside. The firmware has been upgraded with more multimedia capabilities. It has 2 0.3 megapixel cameras and also an SD card slot for more storage. It does not end there too. The RAM has been upped to 4 times the power which means faster loading times and smoother graphics. Best of all, a bigger version is also available and it is simply called the Nintendo DSi XL.
The Nintendo DSi XL is nearly the same as its predecessor except that the screens are much bigger which improves on viewing angles, improved battery life and also newer programs like Flipnote Studio and Nintendo DSi Browser for net surfing. Whichever unit you choose to buy is totally up to you, but what are other things can you do with a Nintendo DSi aside from playing Pokemon and Super Mario?
For one, you can now listen to music. It has a 3.5 mm audio jack and the music player supports formats like AAC and MP3. You can even listen to the music on the go while the lid is closed. Although, the Nintendo DSi may not be able to replace your iPod anytime soon, the most interesting feature though is the four distinct sound filters that alter the sound quality and "texture" of a song. You can make it sound like the radio or even remove the lyrics and go instrumental.
If you have the Nintendo DSi XL, you also surf the net with the unit. Although it may not be as vibrant and as full-on internet experience, the surfing the net with the DSi is quite smooth and also loads quickly even if you use third-party browsers.
All these new enhancements are a welcome addition by many fans of the handheld. Despite some take away like the inability to play older gameboy advance games. However, it is not a total lost except for the most extreme fans, but the game library of the Nintendo DSi is quite impressive in itself. So yet again, Nintendo is strengthening itself as king of the portable handhelds.
