Experts agree that the biggest problem with diesel engines is their emission in the form of soot which is a produced by the process of combustion. These gases played a huge part in the way that our air has become so polluted in recent years. That is the reason why ways were thought up of in order to make diesel engines burn fuel in a more efficient manner without producing all of the harmful gases that we now get from it.
One method that has been created in order to take care of the harmful emissions from diesel engines is the use of DPF on vehicles. DPF stands for diesel particulate filter is a device that can be attached to the exhaust system of a diesel engine vehicle and used to remove some of the particles that can be harmful to the environment.
Tests have proven that this type of device can take out as much as 85% of all the solid particles contained in the exhaust gasses of a diesel engine. There are even cases when a 100% filtering efficiency has been reported. That kind of ideal performance is very hard to reach under normal circumstances so it safe to assume that around 20 to 25% of all particles can still pass through the filter.
The first filters were designed to be disposable. Once the device has been choked full of particulate then it can be thrown away and replaced with a new one. But there are some new filters now that can burn off the materials that it has gathered thereby renewing itself for longer use which is more cost efficient.
Some people would prefer that their vehicles did not come with these devices.That is because of the fact that the filter can sometimes affect the the way that a vehicle performs. Car makers have made it so that when something goes wrong with DPF of the vehicle it will either go slow or sometimes come to a complete stop and that that can really be a problem.
