Are Science Fiction And Fantasy Books Just For Geeks

by Melanie Rogers

Today science fiction and fantasy books are no longer the reading material of choice for geeks, or people who read White Dwarf or role-players at the weekend. Hollywood productions have focused on this genre and have turned it around.

Since Tolkein wrote Lord of the Rings in the 1940s many works have been constantly influenced by it and produced prolifically. It is only since films like Northern Lights, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings, were produced that people have turned to this genre.

This could also describe sci-fi, also marred with the nerd and geek association. The sight of a Star Trek convention can make many run a mile from this genre. However Hollywood movies such as i-Robot, Matrix, inception and of course Avatar, have made sci-fi seem a little more interesting to the ordinary reader.

One of the reasons that these genres have been tainted and shunned by many is because of the books themselves. Some of them, like the undeniably literary masterpiece, Lord of the Rings, which is unreadable to many. It has excessively long descriptions, minute detail and myriad characters.

The other end of the literary scale are widely the available trashy novels. These are often badly written with unbelievable plot lines.

Science fiction books could be described in a similar way; some can have so much scientific detail (for example the electricity descriptions in Frankenstein) that the plot is easily lost, or again they can be poorly written and not believable.

However there are new types of science fiction and fantasy books meaning you needn't read about elves and dwarfs or aliens and robots. Transferred from horror to fantasy are the vampires, and authors like Haruki Murakami write ordinary novels with a fantastic edge. There are numerous unchartered worlds out there, just between the pages of a book.

Looking to move your kids from in front of the computer for a bit? Maybe you can get them into reading for fun. Such novels for teenagers have become more and more popular lately, with the genres of science fiction and fantasy books, science fiction and post-apocalyptic books leading the way. A great new book of this type is the first of the "Save the Pearls" young adult series, "Revealing Eden" written by Victoria Foyt.
