If you have a natural ability to put a smile on people's faces through your jokes and anecdotes, then you belong to the small number of people who have a good sense of humor. Truth is, we do not have to be great comics to be able to make people laugh. The only requirement is that you have a genuine interest in enjoying life as well as finding and interpreting situations in various perspectives. In fact, you can actually learn how to be funny through books or observing people and situations around you.
If making people laugh is an art that can be learned, who and where do you go to get all your materials?
You do not have to go too far if you want to begin learning the basics of making people laugh. Start with the people you are closely associated with who are usually the life of the party or the source of all laughter... your family or friends, perhaps? This important move will help you start your quest of being funny. Study their delivery techniques. Do they speak in varying intonations and voices? Do they laugh when they deliver their own jokes? What about timing? Do they simply drop their witty comments any time or wait for certain scenarios to happen? These are some of the things that will help you get better at delivering your own jokes, so keep a tab on what techniques other people use when making jokes.
Read books about how to be funny because people who have tasted success at making people laugh have various skills and practices to share about being funny. Authors such as Marian Keyes, Stephen Fry, and Woody Allen, among others, are rich sources of information on the subject. You can also find good humorous literature in children's books. All you have to do is go to your nearby bookstore or search online for funny writers and authors of books.
You will also benefit a lot if you read joke books because you hit two birds with one stone here. First, you get entertained and at the same time, you learn how to understand a good joke from a bad one. Although it can help you much if you know a lot of jokes and funny stories, equally important is that you know how to deliver your lines.
Hang out with your friends who enjoy laughing with you. No matter how serious a group is known to be, there will always be someone who can break the group into fits of laughter. Observe what this person does that makes other people laugh. You will see that in time, making other people laugh will become second nature to you, especially as you learn more about the various methods of delivering jokes.
Improvisation is an entertainment practice that you should learn by heart if you want to make a career out of making people laugh. Try attending classes on comedic improvisation and you will learn that most people succeed in this job by using their experiences in their routines. What makes people laugh a lot is not only how the lines are delivered but also the over-embellished facts (and sometimes, disfigurement of facts) that comedians resort to.
