How to Take Amazing Black and White Photos

by Jocelyn Kinder

With the technology available today, color photographs are the norm but many photographers enjoy the challenge of the black and white photo. Due to the nature of the film, the black and white photo will literally last for centuries while the color photograph will fade out over time. This may be one reason so many modern photographers enjoy using the black and white medium for their photographs. For fine arts prints, black and white photography can be easily reproduced.

What advantages are there in taking black and white photos?

Black and white is used by photography students to learn to spot flaws in their photos. Without color, mistakes are much more apparent.

Using black and white photography means having to learn how to develop your film. Serious students should know how to accomplish this. Amateur photographers might use a color photograph and use a software to change it into a grayscale image. When the images are captured in black and white it gives the photographer and the viewer a different perspective on the images.

Creating moods in your photograph can be very pronounced when there is an absence of color. Lighting is essential and it can make different feelings. The lack of color can make objects appear sharper. The effect of this is dramatic.

If I use black and white film how do I choose the right type to produce the photos I want?

The image's appearance will change based on the speed of the film. The grain is very small on the common speeds of 100 and 200. More grain and small particles will be produced if you use 3200 speed film. By experimenting with film, you will figure out what works for you. With black and white film you will need to develop your own film.

Developing Your Own Black and White Film.

It is easy to develop you own film even if you live in an apartment. You will need to find a film developing powder, a place to mix chemicals, good ventilation and a dark room. The developer is usually very simple and comes with good directions.

When using common 35mm film, you will have a simple time and have the capability to enlarge to almost any size you want without messing up the photo's quality. You will also need reels to thread the film that you develop, which run about twenty dollars each. You will need containers that will effectively keep the light out of your developer. These should be stored in a dry and cool environment. Also, you will need to purchase fixer that will allow the film to open to light - this can be stored and reused. Handle this stuff carefully. A soap bath is the solution that you will make to develop and print your film. These should be carefully handled as well. You need a red light in your dark space for developing film. This light will make the chemical turn a blueish color if it goes bad during developing. Keep the soap bath well ventilated before it is opened. Setting up your own developing chamber is not expensive or expensive, as you can see. Do follow directions carefully.
