Incredible Striped Bass Fishing in Spring off Cape Cod's Shores

by Captain Billy Williams

I've had a amazing winter, so I I do hope you have had a great winter as well. I have my fingers crossed that this warm weather conditions are will bode well for the 2012 saltwater fishing season. Hopefully the winds is going to be calm and the bass will be abundant.

The 1st fish reports of migrating Cape Cod stripers should commence coming in about four weeks from today. When I was much younger we might catch the first bass of the year along the Weweantic and Agawam creeks located in Wareham. The month of April was and still is the best time for these places.

Some other spring Cape Cod striped bass areas encompass several estuaries and rivers in Buzzard's Bay, in addition to the bays and harbors down the southern side of the Cape. Bluefish can even be caught at the start of May right off South Cape and Popponesset. These early season bluefish will most likely be focused on squid, which makes for thrilling top water popping options.

The first few striped bass of the year are generally on the tinier side. Even so bigger bass will appear by the 1st week of May. Buzzard's Bay has fished very well in the past few springs for anglers who can pin-point the flocks of birds using radar. Ordinarily these biomasses of striped bass continue north through the Cape Cod Canal and directly into Cape Cod Bay.

While we're talking about spring striper migration channels, MarineFisheries has recently released some helpful studies originating from a striper tagging work that started off back in 2008. Of 128 stripers captured and tagged from Stellwagen Bank, 74% made use of the Cape Cod Canal throughout their annual northwardly spring migration.

Interestingly enough just 35% of these striped bass used the Canal throughout their annual south fall migration. This kind of study correlates very well in what Canal fishermen have been observing all along. Great spring-time angling, accompanied by considerably off fall runs.

We'll just have to wait around and find out what the 2012 Cape Cod striped bass fishing season brings!
