Becoming a skilled sketching artist requires many hours of practice and studies but I've notice a number of common mistakes that beginning artists tends to make. I've turned these common mistakes that I've notice and turned them into this list of sketching tips. As you read through these sketching tips, try to see which one applies to you and make the necessary corrections.
Tip 1: Don't obsess about being perfect. Sketching is not about being perfect. It's about letting your creativity flow and going with the rhythm.
The way to get better to to sketch a lot and you can't do that if you are worry about making every sketch perfect.
Tip 2: Begin to train your eyes to recognize the lines in everything that you see.
Sketching is about see lines in objects and putting them onto paper, so this is a critical skill to have.
Tip 3: Be careful about how you turn your head. The angle of your head will change the view you have on an object.
If you start drawing something from one angle and then lose that angle, it will be hard to complete your drawing.
Tip 4: Did you know that you can create the perception of light by changing the tone of the surrounding area in your drawing? If you want to make an object appear lighter, just darken the area around it.
Tip 5: Before you drive into a sketch, make light outlines of the shapes to make sure that everything will fit into the page. This way your proportions will look better and you won't find yourself running out of space in the middle of your sketch.
Tip 6: Try to sketch faster. By sketching faster, you not only force yourself to let go of any tendencies to be perfect, but you'll find that your sketches will look better too. There's something about the fast strokes that just have a sense of raw energy to it and it makes the sketch come to life.
Tip 7: Don't be intimidated by objects that look complicated. Just break it up in to simple shapes and use those shapes to map out the object on your paper. That will give you a rough outline and a great place to start.
Tip 8: Shading is an important part of making any drawing look realistic, so pay attention to the light source when you draw. Notice how the different shadows are cast and capture that in your drawing.
