Could it be? A 10K Running Plan that Actually works

by Tariku Haque

While I hesitate to start this way, I do want to make it known that I am a former Division 1 cross country and track runner. This is not said to pump my own ego, but to show that I have a good knowledge base when it comes to running programs. After many weeks or research, I could not find a 10k running plan that actually works. For months, I scoured the internet, read running articles, magazines, and anything else I could get my hands on, but struggled to find a complete running program 5k or 10k. There were many running for beginners programs but nothing that was as complete as I was looking for. I wanted a 10k running plan that was thorough and had all the information I was looking for. Each running schedule that I found, whether it be for a 10k or 5k seemed to missing something.

Initially when I came out of mini-retirement, I decided that a 5k would be my first conquest, but I really wanted to train for a 10k. There are many things to look at when deciding on a 10k running plan. Length, experience level, and the results runners have gotten are all things to look at. While I understand that a running program for beginners is different than a 10k running program for advanced individuals, I wanted to make sure I got a plan that covered all the bases.

When I finally thought I found a 10k running program I liked, there was something it was missing. A friend and former teammate finally referred me to RunLovin.com. Upon entering the site, it seemed like they had thorough content, but I still wasn't sold. Since there is a lot of free information on the internet, I thought, why should I pay for it? I signed up for sample program and got my answer. They emailed me a synopsis, and some actual wording from the purchased 10k running program. I was immediately impressed with how complete their program is.

Although it was a 10k running schedule, they had information about shoes, nutrition, equipment, and injury prevention to name a few. What finally sold me was the fact that they incorporate community service and things like letter writing to make the running plan more about a lifestyle change than a racing experience - pretty cool I thought. Not to mention they had a DVD option for each running plan.

They're website clearly lays out their plans which start with the 5k program for beginners, and go all the way to advanced marathon programs. While there is loads of information on the internet, sometimes there is too much. It was great to pay RunLovin who provided me with an easy to read, one-stop shop manual. Oh, I forgot to mention, I set a personal record with their advanced running plan!
