Digital Audio Workstation: Software Versus Hardware

by D J Byrd

Would you enjoy making and recording audio? Do you wish to construct a home recording studio? If you do you should have some thing to record and combine your sounds with each other and output those in an electronic digital format. I wish to speak a bit about a few of the possibilities that you can get. I am talking in small-scale for individuals who are restricted by spending plan and seeking for a little something for home recording. I will examine the variations in your choices in terms of Hardware Gear vs . computer software.

First let me explain that I will be referencing the term DAW which stands for (Digital Audio Workstation). This is the piece of equipment that you will be recording your sounds and vocals into. This can either be a piece of Hardware or a software program. I have been involved with creating and recording music for a long time and have used both Hardware and Software.

So to begin with I'd like to focus on my knowledge about the Hardware Devices that I have tried personally in past times. The earliest real item of equipment which i purchased was the roland VS-840. It was a Hardware DAW that only had 8 tracks of Audio. It recorded and stored all information to ZIP disks. It was an excellent machine at that time for all those Music artists that has been on a tight budget. It recorded in a electronic format coupled with several effects to make use of however it only had a few number of tracks. One other disadvantage was it didn't have way of making Compact disc simply because it didn't have a CD writer.

A few years later on I managed to buy the Yamaha AW-16. The largest benefit of this machine above the VS-840 was that it had much more tracks, which was 16 altogether. Something else which was nice is it included a Compact disk writer which means you had the ability to record your audio tracks to CD when you finished recording. The good thing regarding hardware is getting to touch and regulate the switches and buttons together with your hands. Having said that, the negative thing is the restriction in the amount of tracks. If you prefer a large amount of tracks on a DAW piece of hardware you're going to be shelling out much more cash.

Now I'd like to discuss the advantages of using computer software as a DAW. Although there are several that can be found like Pro Tools, Sonar Cakewalk and Adobe Audition for example. I've completed the majority of my work with Tracktion by Mackie. It isn't as pricey and doesn't have all the features as the other pieces of software however it has got the job done. The largest benefit undoubtedly is the price. You can buy the majority of the computer software for a 3rd of the cost as the Hardware DAWS.

The second biggest benefit of using a DAW is the number of tracks that you can record on. I can remember paying $1,200 for the Yamaha AW-16 that had only 16 tracks. However, I only payed $200 for Tracktion which has unlimited Tracks. The only thing to keep in mind with software is that you are limited by your PC. Don't expect to run 30 or more audio tracks on an old PC. You will need at least a dual core processor and substantial RAM to do this but it is still cheaper than the Hardware DAWS.
