You may find it hard to believe, but when it comes to their craft, an art student means business. Just like a student who is pursuing studies in, say, medicine or business, they also put a lot of time and effort into it. They also have to attend years and years of formal (and even informal) classes to learn about art. Practice makes perfect and experience makes them even better, so art students also try to get as much practice and experience as they could. So you see, he's just like any other student out there.
However, the art student is also unlike any other student. How, exactly, are they different? For some people, they say the difference is in the talent and creativity that he has been born with. He may be gifted when it comes to colors, drawing, and painting. He could skillfully carve an amazing figure out of a shapeless slab of rock or a log. Perhaps his gift lies in molding clay. There are exceptional artists who may not need formal training or education to have a flourishing career in the art world. But all artists know that earning formal training and education in art will make their prospects better and actually even improve their craft. What are the obvious benefits that an art student will get from attending art school? Aside from earning that art degree, the student will, first and foremost, learn. Aside from learning about art, in general, he can even look deeper into his chosen field of art works, from painting to sculpture. Veteran artists would be among the first to admit that there are still so many things that they do not know. Going to regular art classes will also instill discipline in the individual because they have to keep to a certain schedule and some guidelines. Guidelines will not hurt anybody despite what others say about it being quite limiting or restrictive.
This is also where he gets into contact with people who share the same interests with and could discuss art with. Often they will find their mentors and people who will be in the best position to critique their work. The best evaluations will come from people who know what they are talking about, after all.
Interacting with people who are on the same wavelength will also go a long way in encouraging and harnessing his creativity and potential. Networking is also a good result of going to art school, and the more contacts they make early on, the more people they will know when they decide to take that major step in turning their passion for art into a career.
