Getting To Know Legos Minifigures
by Thelma Kent
Whenever Lego is mentioned, people think back to their childhood, and the building blocks that they used to play with. The Lego Company still make these building blocks and for quite some time have also been making Legos minifigures. Children might see them as play things, and they can be incorporated with the building sets, many adults will collect and display them.
In conjunction with the Castle, Space and Town building kits, the first modern style Lego minifigures were issued. These figures all had yellow faces, the expressions were all the same, and their smiles and eyes were painted on in black. It wasn't until the release of the Pirate series in the late 80s that the facial expressions began to change.
The same construction methods and materials are used for both the building bricks and the mini-figures. Specially designed moulds are used for each body part of the minifigure, and the ABS plastic is poured into these moulds and allowed to harden. Exactly the same procedure is used for the production of the various accessories.
Each one of the Lego pieces are constructed from 6 separate parts. The head will rotate side to side, the legs and arms will swivel and the hands will rotate at the end of the arms. These various parts can be swapped between each other, so the creations that you can come up with are seemingly endless.
In 2003 the Lego Company started to produce mini figures with more realistic skin tones, as opposed to the yellow that had previously been used. This coincided with the release of figures depicting characters from popular films. These films included Star Wars, Batman, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter.
These legos minifigures have made it up to series 7 now, and this means that there are another 16 new pieces to be collected. With each figurine there are special accessories, a series 7 collector's leaflet, and a display stand. You will not be able to tell which character you have got, as each mystery bag is sealed, until you finally open it.
