We can define 'craft' as making things, especially by hand. Everyone in this world has different skills, and professional craftspeople perform a particular type of skilled work. Craftwork done by hand should display artistry, individuality and uniqueness.
Many kinds of craftwork are practiced everywhere but there are five broad categories:
Next is paper crafts. Obviously, paper crafts involve paper. Origami, papermaking, collages, paper cutting, bookbinding, calligraphy and paper marbling are all types of paper crafts.
Paper Crafts: As the name implies, paper crafts have to do with paper. These crafts include papermaking, origami, collage making, paper cutting, bookbinding, calligraphy and paper marbling.
Decorative crafts: Furniture making, metalwork, stencilling, stained glass, gilding, sponge ware, surface design of walls, basketry and dried flower arrangements fall into the category of decorative crafts. This category also includes toy making.
Fashion crafts incorporate all the elements of decorating the human body: jewellery, hats, leatherwork (shoes, belts, handbags) and garments. This craft type will naturally incorporate other craft types too, since jewellery involves metalworking; and garments are made by sewing, which is classified as a textile craft.
Functional crafts: Anything other than any of the four types of crafts listed above can be classified as a functional craft. For example, decorative pottery. Many furniture crafts are primarily functional but can also be quite decorative.
Craft making is an important time for both children and adults. First and foremost, children adore creating things even though they seem to be experts in the art of 'mess'. Craft making isn't just a good way to entertain a group of children, it's also a first-hand learning experience vital to their early education and development. The imagination of a child takes flight when doing crafts. Craft making teaches all kind of skills necessary for the children's cognitive development.
