Are baby walkers safe to use?
by Simon Seal
Until a few years ago, there were many concerns raised over the safety of baby walkers. By making babies and toddlers more mobile, parents were worried that they would have more accidents and possibly hurt themselves more. However, since these concerns were raised, baby walkers have been made significantly safer.
One of the main safety issues with baby walkers was that they allowed the toddler to move at quite rapid speeds. This would inevitably lead to the toddler bumping into things, toppling over and having other accidents.
The makers of baby walkers combatted this problem effectively by making their products easier to control and much slower. A slower speed means that there is less chance of a baby or toddler having experiencing an accident when using a baby walker.
Many baby walkers are now fitted with additional safety devices, such as the automatic stop feature. To the relief of many parents, this feature enables the walker to stop automatically if one of the wheels encounters a step or uneven ground, thereby stopping the walker from tipping or toppling over.
Children used to sit in baby walkers to move around, but this design has now changed. Instead of the frame surrounding the child, the toddler can now use the walker to pull him or herself up. They then push the walker around like a toy, which is much safer and easier to control.
If you want to fully protect your baby or toddler from accident or injury, the only way to do it is to keep a watchful eye on your child at all times. You can also ensure that your home and everything in it is baby proofed. This lowers the risk that your baby, using his or her baby walker, will encounter anything dangerous or potentially hazardous.
