Baseball Cards Popularity

by Joey Vennili

Baseball Cards are trading cards that focus on the sport of baseball. They are printed on paper or card stock. The front of the card has a picture of a player or a particular baseball team. Once the back of the card was used for advertising. Now the back has the player's biography and stats. Cards are most popular in the United States where the sport began.

Cards are very popular in the U.S. They can also be found in Japan, Canada, or Cuba, but the United States are where they are the most popular. Baseball is the Great American Past time. Baseball cards are a great marketing tool with the main companies producing the cards being Topps, Upper Deck, and Fleer. They have been around for so many years, so they are highly collectible.

Typically, a card during this era would have had an image or picture of a player or team on the front with advertising for a particular business on the back, which later were replaced with the player's stats and biography. Color printing increased the card's appeal and appearance. Photos were usually done in black and white, sepia, and color. In 1886, Baseball Cards were often included in cigarette packs and other tobacco products. This had a two-fold purpose. First for promotional reasons and secondly, the cards actually protected the cigarettes from being damaged.

A multi-billion dollar industry was born from a childhood hobby. The cards are classified and priced by two main sources. The Beckett Guide rates cards with a scale system. The American Card Catalog only rates cards before the year 1951. The value of a card is increased if it has an autograph from a player. To uphold the value of a card it needs to be maintained and kept in good condition.

The Beckett Guide rates cards with a system and The American Card Catalog only concentrates on cards that were printed before 1951. The most difficult cards to find are the rare cards. They usually are limited edition cards or extremely old cards. To retain the value of a card it needs to be kept in good condition. Oddly, a rare card even in poor condition can still fetch tens of thousands of dollars. The value of a card is also increased when a player autographs it.

The main focus of collectors and historians are the rare vintage cards. Huge sums of money will be paid for a collector to obtain one of these cards. These treasures can be purchased at card shows or online. Every year card shows are held throughout the country and many people, from the avid collector to the fan show up for these and thousands of dollars are spent.

Once in a while you will hear of one being found in Grandpa's attic or at a flea market and estate sales are a great place to find treasures as well. Prices for cards are based on guides, as stated above, or by current market value, the economy, or how much a collector is willing to pay for the card.

The highest priced cards or most sought after cards can sell for six figures easily. A 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth can auction today for $3 to $5 million dollars. The 1909 Honus Wagner will fetch about $3 million and a "Shoeless " Joe Jackson was once valued at $200,000, but would probably sell for much more at auction. Who knew a childhood hobby would become a multi-billion dollar industry.
