A Guide To Choosing Dystopian Novels

by Hailey Wandell

In order to define what dystopian novels you have to know what the word dystopia means. The word refers to a future in which society has gone wrong. This can be for various different reasons such as a nuclear explosion, technology turning against its users or a world ravaged by natural disaster.

A dystopia is the opposite of a utopia. In a utopia everything runs perfectly and there are no problems. Indeed in many novels a society starts off seeming like a utopia before revealing that all is not perfect and that appearances are not all they seem.

In a dystopia people suffer. This is not just in the sense of the modern world where some people are poor and starving. In this genre of stories a significant amount of people may be starving, prisoners or being deliberately misled in order to preserve a ruling order.

Often people will look at these stories and see that the future the writer predicts does not occur. This perspective misses the point of this type of story. The idea is to reflect current concerns into society and exaggerate them. A recent example of this is The Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games stories are about a group of teenagers who are forced to fight to the death for the entertainment of adults. These contests are called The Hunger Games because food is scarce and is the reward for success. The stories reflect a number of modern issues such as the dominance of reality television, how society views youth and the human desire for violence.

Other examples of dystopian novels include 1984 by George Orwell and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Both of these stories were influential in reflecting concerns about surveillance technology, propaganda and in the case of Brave New World genetics. You can find a number of books and electronic books in this genre online.

You can find a variety of genres of of novels currently on the market, like spy fiction and detective stories, butscience fiction and fantasy books have been gaining many followers as of late. One of the newest series in the genre is is author Victoria Foyt's noted trilogy, "Save the Pearls". A work of science fiction, it follows the story of a young girl who must find a mate to survive in the harsh world she inhabits.
