Age Restrictions And Computer Games: Yes Or No
by Jewel Chesson
Many parents are confronted with children who want to play computer games that are age restricted and deemed inappropriate for certain age groups. The nagging and "But I played it at Mark's house" pleading can wear a parent down very quickly.
Age restrictions for computer games are about the same as the age restrictions for movies. They are based on the content of the computer game - and do not be fooled by the 'it's just a game' excuse. Age restrictions are needed because of the nudity, violence, and sexual content of today's computer games. We should be especially worried about the gratuitous violence in many computer games.
Some computer games can lead to nightmares and paranoia, especially in young children who are unable to differentiate between the game and reality. Another danger is that many children believe that what they can do on a computer, they can do in real life. This is alarming, as they won't know what to expect aside from what they see on the computer.
As with movies and television, games can inure children to violence, making them subconsciously 'used to' certain levels of violent behaviour. They may not fully understand that what you do on a computer game, in real life leads to injury and even the death of another human being. In a game, you shoot someone and move on - there is little awareness of what the victim of the shooting is going through. The game dictates the good and the bad, and you as the player have no say.
Of course, using the computer isn't all cons. Proponents will tell you that it improves their reaction time, mouse handling skills and so forth. But computer games do not push kids to use their imaginations, to think creatively, to make sensible choices, or live healthy lives. Sure educational games are advantageous, but spending too much time on the computer is never a good thing.
Although some age restrictions may seem overly cautious, they are designed to protect children from behavior that they cannot process properly. Kids are different from each other, their parents are in the best position to decide what their kids can handle, but it's still a good idea to follow age restrictions.
