Apple Orchards In Ohio Provide Food And Fun
by Casandra Newton
Robert Frost, one of America's great poets, knew what farm work was. Probably he never worked apple orchards in Ohio but his poem about picking the fruit evokes in readers' imaginations images that enable them to experience the work vicariously.
Like other fruit trees apples can bear fruit over Summer months but their fruit tends to be most prolific around Autumn, or Fall, as the season is known in American English. That is when orchard owners must get their crops in before they go to waste. As Frost laments, the task is wearying and not easily given over to machines.
Roughly sixty percent of the annual crop is eaten as fresh fruit which as a long storage life. The remainder of the crop is juiced or turned into cider or pulp for pies and crumbles. Although the crop can be stored and used in many ways it is essential that it is harvested and not allowed to simply fall to the ground and rot. This is why there is an urgency at harvest time and a mood of excitement as fruition comes about.
Apples are members of the rose family and are grown around the world. Approximately seventy million tonnes may be produced, mainly in China but with the USA in second place. Thirty two states in America produce apples and Ohio is among the top ten. Many orchards are dotted over the various counties in the state and it is a happy tradition for people to come out and help with the harvest.
There are more than seven thousand cultivars and more are being developed all the time. Heirloom apples breeds like the famous Orange Pippins are remembered with affection but new varieties are carefully bred for the qualities that people want such as tartness, sweetness and crispness. Many growers plant many different varieties that bear at different times so that the harvest is spread over as any many months as possible.
Some trees can grow quite tall. This enables them to bear large crops but makes picking difficult. Trees can be pruned so that picking is easier and can even be planted in hedges for machine picking. However, for amateurs and poets the experience of feeling the rung of a ladder in the sole of a foot as one reaches up through leaves to pluck a perfect fruit is an important part of the harvesting experience.
Casual pickers may have fun, or earn money but, orchard owners may furrow their brows at the prospect of getting fruit in before it falls to the ground and wastes. Not only in Ohio, but around the world farmers have traditionally harnessed community spirit to get harvests in. Combine harvesters might have done away with hay and wheat harvesting but in apple orchards the ancient practices are still useful.
The tradition of community involvement lives on in apple orchards in Ohio. People may drive out from cities to pick their own fresh fruit from places that are open to the public. Consumers have fun on the farm, picking fruit, going for rides and enjoying many activities. Farmers get their crops harvested and sold in very clever ways. Both sides win.
