After the war, this type of marketing found a new material to serve its purpose in plastic. Metal signs, therefore, became highly collectable. Today, many people travel around and seek out these old signs for decoration within their home or on their property. The values have continued to rise over the years.
As with any antique that gains popularity, collectors must be careful that they are not fooled by replicas. There are several companies which make copies of the originals, even adding rust and wear so that the sign looks of the correct age. These copies may serve decorating purposes, but they are not of the same value as the real deal.
Restoration is desirable by some people, but not by all. There are people that are of the mindset that any type of work done on an item immediately renders it less valuable. Others will wish to restore it to the way it looked prior to aging. It is an individual choice and one that the owner will need to make.
To clean a metal sign that was found, an individual should only use warm water with a small hint of dish soap. Immediately after gently wiping it clean, he should use another clean, dry cloth to remove the soapy water. He should be careful not to scrub too hard so that it does not remove the paint from the surface.
