Participating In A Color Run 5k Was Absolutely One Of The Greatest Things I've Ever Done

by Kimberly A. Salzerell

A few days ago, I participated in a color run 5k, and it was truly an amazing experience. I know that many of you have likely participated in some 5k runs before, but this one was quite different. First of all, the website where I registered was far more whimsical and was actually funnier than any other event website I have ever seen, and when I got to the actual event, the staffers and volunteers were excited beyond reason.

Now if you are like I was a few weeks ago, you probably have no clue what a color run 5k is, so let me explain it to you. I arrived, got the registration packet, which included an amazing t-shirt, some sunglasses, and a few other things, including a packet that I will tell you about in a bit. Once I fastened on my number, I put on my new sunglasses and did some stretches and waited excitedly for the race to start.

Once it sounded, I was off, running at a nice comfortable pace, because while I appreciate a bit of competition, I was there to have fun and get a bit of exercise. After running for a few minutes, we were thrilled to find ourselves in the middle of an almost magical cloud of colored powder. Every few minutes along the way, the Color Bomb Squad would bombard the runners with the lively, brightly colored powder, to the utter delight of the runners.

This is the essence of the color run, and the reason everyone was having such an amazingly good time. I ran the whole five kilometers, getting a new coating of colors every few minutes, and by the time I reached the finish line, I was completely covered in vibrant color from head to toe, and I felt like a living, breathing rainbow.

At the finish line, everyone was completely energized and excited, and everyone was hugging and enjoying the sense of elation and laughing about the colors cakes on their faces. I didn't want the moment to ever end, but end it did and I went home, feeling just a cool feeling that lasted with me for a few days. I thought I would have to wait until the next color run in my city, but I heard through the grapevine about the color run San Diego was going to have soon and since I had been planning to visit my sister who lives there, I pulled out a new white shirt and made my plans to more color-filled joy!
