Celebrate The Coming Of Fall With Ohio Apple Orchards

by Patrice McCoy

The ripening of hundreds of varieties of apples usher in autumn. Some call it the love fruit. It was named as the fruit leading to the Adam's and Eve's fall. Whether true or not, its juicy fragrance is certainly enough to warrant that claim. The fall season is celebrated by Ohio apple orchards with festivals and special events recognizing the virtues of these excellent fruits. Enjoy the festivities in celebration of this most exquisite fruit.

There are over 40 varieties grown in Ohio, with several being native to the state. They produce over 100 million pounds of this delicious fruit, from September through November. Some provide bags and baskets of whatever variety you want. Some provide a pick-your-own and some bag-your-own, which is the opportunity to pick from a table of mixed varieties for you to mix and match from. Pick out all of your favorite variety, or choose from a selection and try them all.

The raw fruit is not the only attraction. There is cider, both raw and homogenized. Some orchards have tours and illustrate the process of making cider, with generous tasting samples afterward. Some of the tours show a variety of relevant products, such as cobblers, crisps, coffeecakes, applesauce and butters, and jellies and juice. These tours often provide a gourmet delight of flavors and textures.

There are many festivals provided or sponsored by the growers in the area. They elect a festival queen and her court, have contests, sponsor bake-offs, and many other festive events. Of course, there has to be a parade. Eating contests, competitions for peeling and producing the longest peel are also sponsored. It is possible to buy many different baked goods, provided by area residents with their original recipes.

This fruit is truly a miracle. It has no fat, cholesterol, or sodium. It is high in fiber and is touted as being one of the healthiest fruits. It helps prevent cancer and cardiovascular disorders, and adds a good amount of fiber to the person's diet. It is a great way to get started on the recommended five fruit and vegetable servings required for good health.

Phytonutrients are one of the biggest health benefits, as are antioxidants and the mineral boron which it provides. These are effective in fighting heart disease and cancer. They also help regulate blood sugar. They are sweet and juicy, making them excellent in replacing high calorie and high fat sweets. Whether served at meals or between, they make an excellent sweet treat.

Fall festivals and events can be located by searching online. Your are sure to find something for your enjoyment in your area from the many growers in all areas of the state. Many of these growers sponsor their own festivals or events in others' festivals. A royal court is almost without fail a part of every festival, and, of course, a variety of contests. There is a fair atmosphere in most, with foods, crafts, and contests reminiscent of a fair.
