Fifty Shades (and the rest) of Great!

JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has been pipped to the post by Fifty Shades of Grey, selling a whopping 5.3 million copies in the UK alone. This means Fifty Shades is also the fasting-selling novel of all time, both in its physical book and ebook forms. It is still has a way to go if it wants the trilogy to surpass Rowling, however. The Harry Potter series achieved a phenomenal worldwide sale of 450 million copies. E.L James' trilogy is currently at 40 million.
James' masterpiece stars Anastasia Steele and the insatiable, Christian Grey. Anastasia (Ana) is a young literary graduate; she is very innocent and naive when it comes to sex and relationships. Christian, on the other hand, is an incredibly wealthy young man; experienced, but unable to offer any kind of love and affection, or be loved. The intensity between the two characters is truly staggering. Even though the narrative of this book is not quite on the same literary level as our great authors, notably Thomas Hardy for example, it is still an addictive read and one that makes you want to see what events unravel.
What makes this book so captivating is its explicit sex scenes, for they really are the meat of the plot and the crux of the conflict in Ana and Christian's relationship. The language used to describe these scenes is very-matter-of-a-fact. It is not metaphorical and doesn't pretend to be anything it is not. It is clear, unadulterated, in-you-face language, and that's what it makes it so addictive! James is truly a brave author, one who is now laughing all the way to the bank!
When it comes to openly talking about sex, us Brits are not exactly the most liberal of nations! However, after reading Fifty Shades of Grey, many women are now admitting that they have never felt more comfortable talking about what they like or dislike in the bedroom. It is safe to say that this new novel has really challenged us and our preconceptions of what is 'normal behaviour'. In a very real sense, James has succeeding in creating a new, socially acceptable form of pornography.
Even despite these findings, some people are still are a little unforthcoming in their admissions about, a.) reading the novel, and b.) their open discussions about sex and sensuality. It is interesting when you look back at this figures - 5.3 million copies sold in the UK, of which over 1.5 million have been e-books. Did 1.5 million people purchase this novel as an e-book purely because of advances in technology, or were they a little embarrassed to walk into a store and buy it perhaps?
Whether it's the story, the sex, the BSDM theme or the impossibly hot Christian Grey, Fifty Shades has stirred the nation, if not the Western world. So where next? Has the gauntlet been thrown down? Should guys take notice and do they have something to learn from this book? And why is it so popular with women?
