Looking At Gardening From A Different Point Of View
by Sasha Peterson
Is gardening or working in the yard all about toiling away and not full of joy for you? Would you rather be doing something else and simply pay for someone to take care of your lawn and garden? If this sounds like you then you very well might be missing out on a part of your life that could bring you great joy and satisfaction. Before we're done here, you might actually want to think about reclaiming some of those chores that you pay someone to do for you.
Human beings have been working the soil since the dawn of man. It is a part of our nature and there is probably a piece of you that is hard wired to get your hands dirty from time to time and get intimate with nature. If you avoid such work completely then you might actually be doing yourself some harm. You might be missing out on a part of what makes you human. You are missing out on connecting with the earth and gaining enjoyment and satisfaction from gardening, even if it is only a brief journey a couple of times a week into this primordial part of your genetic makeup.
I'm sure that you're terribly busy these days. Society these days has most of us running to jobs during the day where we sit in offices under fluorescent lights with recycled air. When the day is done we either try to relax or continue to run around taking care of children or even working a second job. There's never enough time to do all the things that we want to and doing yard work might not be the most relaxing thing that you can think of to do. So, you might hire someone to take care of mowing the grass and tending to flowerbeds. It's natural. Everyone does it. You want to do something with your down time that is relaxing instead of something that resembles work.
Take some time this week to spend some time outdoors working in your yard. Do something a little different. You don't have to start a huge project or completely landscape your yard. Just planting a few flowers or concentrating on a small flowerbed might be all that you have time for but the benefits can be extremely gratifying.
It is part of our nature to create and nurture. Nowhere can this need be fulfilled more easily than with gardening. Even if you live in an apartment, a small window box with some flowers to tend to can fill this need. Give it a try and you might find that you become addicted to gardening and want to include a little time tending to your yard or little flowerbed on a regular basis.
