The Technique Of Fusing Glass
by Vicki Pound
When it comes to working with glass as an art form, it is an aspect that has been around for quite some time. Still, there are different techniques which are both ancient and modern. So, while an individual may know the art of casting or fusing glass, this does not always mean the individual has the knowledge or experience required to do blowing.
While some students study all these aspects, most often serious artists only focus on one specific area. This is most likely because each aspect requires a great deal of time and work in the studio. After which, a number of individuals then place any artwork into a local gallery or for sale through other channels.
Whereas, casting and fusing both include working with high heat and shaping tools while in process. It is important to note that all aspects of art glass work generally require working with extreme hot and cold temperatures. So, it is definitely possible to also sustain injuries when working with other aspects, although, most often the most severe injuries occur to glassblowers.
Unlike blown objects, all these methods can be applied to one piece during single firings in order to add relief, shape and depth. So, an individual can often spend a number of sessions while completing one piece. Whereas, blown objects are often set in a method in which no further changes can be made.
It is now quite common to find classes in blowing, casting and fusing in local art schools, glass studios, weekend workshops and other locations. Whereas, students working in the art of glassblowing are often working towards a degree. Each student must decide for oneself whether or not a degree is necessary based on the type of work one plans to do with this and other art forms in the future.
There are also other objects such as cups, glasses, dishes and other artwork which can be created legally that are aimed towards galleries, museums and shops. This is why it is important to create and work within legal guidelines when and where possible. In addition, well known artists have also been known to create lighting and other effects for various well known clubs, hotels and restaurants.
This type art work can often be found in many airports, Las Vegas area hotels, restaurants and other tourist locations. These lights are generally functional and not for sale. Still, when guests inquire about the artist, then the artist generally becomes more well-known while the individual can then most likely place a custom order if so desired.
There are dangers when working with all aspects of glass. Blowing is most likely the most dangerous as individuals have work with long blow torch and pipes to create objects. Casting is most likely the least as all is required that the individual pour liquid glass into a mold. Fusing glass can also be dangerous as the individual must often handle different objects which require shaping during the process. Regardless, it is often best to carry as much coverage as possible when working with these art forms so that individuals can obtain medical assistance if such need were to occur.
