Plasma Cutters Are Really Nifty Tools For Cutting Metal
by Kenny Marcum
Plasma cutters are only useful for cutting metal, but at that they do a superb job. Apart from simply cutting, they can gouge out metal with the help of modified nozzles, but they are usually just used for cutting sheets of metal to shape. However, they are by far the most versatile tools currently available for this purpose.
Compared to a band saw, they are much more mobile. You do not have to manhandle heavy pieces of metal onto a table: you can take the cutter to the work. As long as you have a current source or a powerful enough generator, you can use it anywhere. This mobility is a huge advantage.
While these cutters are much like an arc welder in their basic concept, they do not use expensive welding rods. A source of compressed gas to form the plasma is needed, however. Like arc welders, they work at very high temperatures so they can carve through metal with ease. It is also possible to control the cutting very accurately, so very little extra work is required to achieve the perfect cut.
These characteristics mean that they are perfect for use in CNC operations. Models designed for CNC use do not have to touch the workplace initially, which means that they wear less. It would be hard to cut metal in CNC applications without these tools.
While oxy-acetylene torches do a great job, the cuts possible are not so neat and controlled and they are also not suitable for CNC use. They cut more slowly because they use lower temperatures and are generally less powerful. Despite this, there are still applications where oxy-acetylene is the only option, although mostly this technology is steadily being replaced.
Plasma cutters are great tools for a variety of applications where an ability to cut metal is needed. It is likely that they will take over the world of metal cutting to a large extent, just as welding has replaced riveting. Like any other tool, they can be dangerous if used carelessly, but common sense about using safety equipment such as goggles and protective clothing and avoiding fires is really all that is needed for safe use.
