Silver Dollars: Which Ones Are Most Valuable?

Some silver dollars are worth more than others. There are many variations of this coin and some are easy to find while others are very rare. Another important factor in determining price is the condition that the coin is in. An uncirculated coin or one in mint condition will be worth far more than a coin that is damaged or worn down. The year that the coin was minted and the design on the coin are also important factors.
The Bust design was one of the earliest designs, produced from 1794-1803. It is one of the hardest to find today. Because it is so rare, the coin will generally fetch a minimum of $600 today and those coins in good condition may go for considerably more. These coins will most often be sold at auction because they are so rare.
The next design produced after the Bust was the Seated Liberty. This one was produced from 1840 to 1873. This design is also very rare and because so few were created originally, they are extremely hard to find today. Many of the coins were melted down to create new currency. A silver dollar in good condition with the Seated Liberty design could easily sell for $200 or more.
Morgan silver dollars were minted from 1878-1921 and are much more easily found. These are a favorite with investors and collectors. You can easily find these coins with most dealers and many are quite affordable even for someone on a budget. There are some coins with the Morgan print that are rare and could be worth as much as $7000, though.
The Peace design was introduced in 1921 and produced until 1934. While it may not have the appeal of older coins, it is still a great choice for any investor or collector because of its high silver content. Silver dollars minted before 1961 generally contain 90% pure silver while those made after that date will only contain 40% silver. The 1934 S in mint condition may sell for $1200 or more.
