When a woman is pregnant and about to have a baby, they may have a lot of concerns about how well things will go and if their baby and themselves will get through the birthing process okay. There are those who have found this to be an opportunity to help an expectant mother overcome her fears and anxiety by acting as a companion who will serve them while the process of birthing a child proceeds from labor to delivery to postpartum activities. These helpers are often trained and certified in caring for an expectant mother and are knowledgeable of the situations that can and do arise on a consistent basis when one is pregnant. There are numerous steps one has to take to become a birth doula and gain the certification they need to be a professional care giver.
A number of organizations exist to provide the training that one needs to obtain to become a certified doula. The process begins with learning what is involved with performing these duties. These organizations offer educational classes where a person can become familiar with what will be expected of them and what skills they will need to develop to fulfill those expectations. This can be done by attending workshops the organizations offer on a continuous basis.
One must become familiar with all the aspects of child birth. This usually starts with reading books on the subject by authors who are considered experts in the field. This helps to give a person insights into what is happening and what complications can arise.
After a person has sufficient knowledge to be able to understand what is happening they can apply for a certification package. This package is normally needed in order to prepare for further study. The package will have an outline of what type of coursework and experiences will be necessary to have before one can be certified.
The next step would be to attend a series of workshops that cover the birthing process. These can be classes that are designed for the expectant mother learning about their bodies and what they are about to go through. Other workshops are usually available where the classwork is focused more on the duties of the person who will be helping the mother.
One will be expected to attend at least three live births before some organizations will certify a person. A person is usually required to be there from the time labor support starts to the time the birth takes place. This must also be documented and signed by a doctor or nurse who was also present. One of these births can be through cesarean section.
A lot of paperwork can take place during the final phases to the certification process. One might be required to create a support system in their immediate community that they can rely on for help. This, too, might have to be documented. When all requirements are fulfilled, then the person can petition the organization for their certification.
